Buckland Hotel

A Japanese-influenced bar of cosy delights and scintillating cuisine.

Editorial

The Buckland Hotel has lately redefined the local Alexandrian pub by replacing the dusty flanks of this venue with a floor plan that might have been lifted from a Japanese pinball game. What this means, in the light of day, is a fission of dark oriental funk in the working heart of an inner-city beer cup.

Actually, this neighbourhood local has long had a good reputation for its bistro food, but its funky renaissance has in fact offered us something a cut above the average bar chop. Japanese tapas, designed by the hand of Kyochi Kai, who is known in Sydney circles for his work in Darlinghurst's Toko 2, now offers us steaming bowls of spicy edamame, trout carpaccio and tuna in ponza sauce (Japanese citrus dressing) and a mouth watering marinated soft shell crab with wasabi mayonnaise. The cocktails are also colourful, particularly the Purple Haze - a concoction of Smirnoff, triple sec and Chambord.

As is often the case, a large TV and dark decor can leach the senses during the day, but these are the steak and bar grub hours. Once the sun dips away, the low ottomans begin to make sense and the place begins to unfold into a more intimate, cosy affair that seems naturally suited to the Japanese tapas on the menu. The atmosphere becomes genial, the chilled music soothing. This is when the Buckland really comes into its element, and the consistent streams of drinkers and diners are testament to its successful new formula.

The Buckland is a great place to go for drinks, lunch or dinner. We often have group functions there. It has a modern funky vibe , good staff and good food -- --- highly recommended. There is a lounge area and a small outdoor courtyard as well. There is a fireplace in the lounge area for cosy winters and outdoor seating for all year round dining (they have outdoor heaters on during the winter months! )
