Just like a giant garage sale but bigger, this market plays host to plants, pre-loved goods, and fresh fruit and veg, so you won’t go home empty handed.

Editorial

The weekly Belconnen Trash and Treasure market is run by Rotary Belconnen, and has its humble beginnings in September 1974 when the first of these markets took place on - local lore has it - a rainy day. It is said to have resembled a garage sale and to have raised $300 for Rotary’s community projects. Now, 30 years later, these markets have become a hallmark Canberra weekend activity, and over the years have raised $3,000,000 for various community projects in Canberra and all over Australia.

The markets are a collection of stalls selling fruit and vegetables, plants, second hand goods, clothing, arts and crafts and whatever else the stall holders want to bring along. The fruit and vegetables have to be home grown to be sold at the markets, thus preventing these community-based markets from becoming commercialised. To hold a stall costs $15; entry is by coin donation. The markets operate between 6am and 1pm every Sunday, at the Jamison Centre car park in Macquarie. For more information contact Rotary Belconnen on (02) 6255 3299 or email secretary@belconnenrotary.org.au.
