The Canberra Irish Club offers a no-fuss, casual venue to down some Guinness.

Editorial

If you're going to attend an Irish pub then it's considered good manners to order at least one Guinness. Doubly so if you happen to find yourself in an Irish Club. It's not a law or anything, it just helps everyone get into the spirit of things and pretend they're in Ireland; you know, it's drizzling outside and everyone is named Peter or Paddy. That said, Canberra's Irish Club offers a fully stocked bar next to all the Irish beverages you could want. There's Guinness, Bulmers, Kilkenny and as many Glen-prefixed Scotches you could want, and that's just the start.

The club itself was built back in the '70s and, frankly, it hasn't changed all that much in the intervening years. Like any good community centre, there's a main drinking hall, which is used for various functions, and a separate bar area. The decor throughout is functional and on par with what you might find in an older-style pub. Nothing to get excited about, but you will appreciate the prices. There's also a rotation of events on, everything from speed dating through to more traditional Irish fare.

While no one is driving across town to drink at the Canberra Irish Club (except maybe the diehards), it's a no-fuss, casual place to duck in for a drink if you're in the neighbourhood. Of course, come Saint Patrick's Day and you'll be wrestling just to get in the doors.
