La Cantina
Editorial
From the moment you walk through the door at La Cantina, you know have arrived somewhere special. Although conveniently located at the Narrabundah main shopping area, inside the restaurant diners are transported directly to Europe. The modern décor, well-chosen oil paintings and huge wine rack all add to the continental ambience, but what really sets this restaurant apart is the building itself. Completely stripped back and renovated by the owners, the interior has been transformed into an Italian brick cellar using 130-year old imported Roman bricks.
The food served at La Cantina is yet another highlight. In keeping with its refined premises, the menu is thoughtful and immediately tempting. Undeniably Italian - just like its creators - the use of traditional dish names give patrons an opportunity to refresh their language skills, which span entrées, meat, chicken and seafood mains, plus luxurious pasta dishes and a selection of pizzas. Diners are often enticed by the simple yet superior beef carpaccio marinated in balsamic vinegar and rolled in sea salt and freshly ground pepper, then cured with fresh lemon juice and extra virgin olive oil. The simplicity-meets-sophistication atmosphere of the restaurant is embodied by the popular main course of costoletta - a light but crunchy crumbed veal cutlet served with satisfying roasted chat potatoes and fresh herbs. Not to be outdone, the pasta selection also shines; take the ravioli di anatra - delicate parcels filled with slow roasted duck, cherry tomatoes, light cream, basil and parmesan - which is a perennial favorite among diners. Intimate and refined, guests bound for La Cantina are in for an unforgettable Italian affair.
