Tilley's Devine Cafe Gallery
Editorial
Thankfully the closest Tilley's Divine - better known as 'Tilley's' got to political was in 1998, when it became the first bar to ban smoking indoors - eight years before the legislators caught up and made it law.
Tilley's is a café and restaurant and gallery - all great reasons to go there, but this review is all about the music - and as a music venue there's plenty to like. Manager/proprietor Paulie Higgisson is a local legend on the performing circuit who has, over the years, sustained great friendships with more musicians than you and I have probably had hot dinners. Paulie's background as a producer and sound engineer means she knows what an intimate music venue needs - and to this end she delivers.
With an emphasis on quality over quantity, Paulie chooses her acts carefully and usually reserves Saturday night as performance night, with tickets available at the door. With a roll call of national and international guests including Renee Geyer, Lior, Ron Sexsmith, The Whitlams, Luka Bloom and just about every other thinking person's outfit to hit town, it's easy to see why Tilley's Devine is a Canberra institution, making it a favourite with both locals and travelling bands and musicians passing through town.
