The Old Canberra Inn truly is a rustic old beauty.

Editorial

While we may think that we live in a completely different world from our pioneering forefathers (and mothers) some things never change, like hanging out at the Inn; drinking ale with your mates and listening to music.

Step into the charming Old Canberra Inn in Lyneham, which was built way back in 1860 and is now under the protection of the National Trust of Australia, and you'll get a sense of how nineteenth century Australians partied. Well, sort of, but without the spit and sawdust on the floor. While The Old Canberra Inn retains its history, it has undergone extensive renovations but the main room still has exposed beams and a rustic feel, with the big open fireplace adding to the ambiance.

Friday and Saturdays are the big music nights at the Inn with live music ranging from rock, jazz, country, folk and blues to cover bands. Thursday is karaoke night, which can be amusing or irritating. If your eardrums start to bleed you can escape to the beer garden or the pool table.

There's plenty of beers on tap - VB, Carlton Draught, Resches, Cascade Light, Bulmers and Pure Blonde or the more fancy pants Heineken, Becks, Crown Lager, Carlsberg, Corona, Grolsch, and Coopers Sparkling Ale, plus a decent wine list.

The bistro menu is much the same - don't expect too much, and you'll be pleasantly surprised. The servings are extremely generous (there is a longstanding competition to finish a whole plate of their large nachos) so bring an appetite, or some helpful friends. The stand-out meal, though, would have to be the steak. Beautifully cooked and served with a mountain of chips - this is what pub grub is all about. Perfect for the whole family, perfect for Sunday afternoons in the beer garden, perfect for Friday nights and live music: welcome to the Old Canberra Inn.
