The Durham
Editorial
While the faux Irish pub is the preferred drinking establishment in most Australian suburbs, Ye Olde English pubs have been making some headway in recent years. On that note, The Durham certainly channels the spirit of EastEnders and London-style drinking. The outside is painted London telephone box red and comes with the obligatory cast-iron lamps and crest signage. Step inside and you'll find a comfortable, well-worn venue. There's a selection of church-pew-style wooden booths lining one wall, shared tables in the centre of the room, and an old-school long bar lined up with red bar stools. While it doesn't set the world on fire, there's a comfortable, quaintness about the whole thing.
With a good mix of ales on tap the drinks selection is what you would expect from an English-style pub. Strangely, German beers are particularly well represented - obviously there's no Basil 'Don't mention the war' Fawlty at play here. In any case, connoisseurs can sample Erdinger, Warsteiner or even the locally made Zierholz. Naturally, there are also several varieties of local beer on tap. If you want to kick your evening off with a bang, Thursday and Friday nights offer discount cocktails with a selection of shots available as well. Add a reasonably priced pub menu and a casual atmosphere and you can see why the Durham is a no-thrills favourite.

A great kitchen and friendly staff facilitated my enjoyable evening, as the night progressed from fantastic schnitzel dinner to quickly served drinks and live music. While some of the other patrons appeared a touch on the gloomy side of life (were you there john?) the ambiance and atmosphere were enjoyable and ill definately be returning with friends. Definately worth checking out while in Kingston

i have been to the durham on a number of occasions and each time have been disapointed about the quality of service! the food is amazing but the staff working the floor are rude and slow, young kids that seem more interested chatting with a mate then making the pub some money

Here from Melbourne for a couple of days, great find value for money, great atmosphere, staff very friendly & ready to serve, definitely better value than the over priced pizza restaurants nearby and for the some price I got a steak! 1" thick T Bone for $23 with chips & salad. Will be back & definitely recommend.

I am a local and have been to the Durham a few times and returned after about 6months to find that The Durham has significatly become one of the places to avoid on a night out! The food was ok but one of the guests in my party became ill because of it, the bouncers were rude and very "hands on", the bar manager had a very care free attitude, they ran out of soft drink at 9:30pm on a peek trading night and the band was horrible. I will be think again about go there again!!!!

New to Canberra and had a friend recommend the Durham to me but was bitterly dissapointed. The food was good but staff were rude and really didnt seem to care. We went to buy a Cocktail based on coke at 10pm and they had run out, so changed to a soda based drink and they had also run out of lemon squash, soda water and lemonade!! The secruity were unhelpful and we saw them arguing with a couple that seemed to be fine. Highly recommend avoiding this pub in the future!
