Editorial

Italian restaurants in the capital can often be indistinguishable; good but not great. For anyone who has ever eaten in Italy, this is such a shame. However, for those in the know, L'unico Ristorante has been providing truly great Italian meals for years. Having recently had a make-over - which included the return of their famous wood-fired pizza oven - L'unico Ristorante is moving from strength to strength. Also new is the fact that absolutely everything on the menu can be bought as takeaway, which is perfect for late nights after work, or a quiet evening in.

While the pizza oven and menu may have had a revamp, the decor is still as elegant as ever. The refurbished menu has a stronger emphasis on pizza for dinner, but the introduction of a specially priced lunch ($17.90) of entree and main, will surely win many hearts (and wallets). The choice is reasonable, the selection traditional, and the food superb: try the daring cannelloni di baccala (home-made cannelloni filled with salted cod, silverbeet, green Sicilian olives and bechamel sauce, served with asparagus and a white lemon and chive sauce) or the more traditional bruschetta al San Daniele (with San Daniele prosciutto, cherry tomatoes and bocconcini). L'unico's pizzas are made in the Roman style, and come either rossa or bianca (with or without a tomato base). The house speciality, the L'unico pizza, is a forceful combination of spicy Italian sausage (made on the premises), cherry tomatoes, porcini mushrooms and mozzarella. The flavours are gamey and smoky, and go down well with a bottle of wine, a few friends and some great conversation.

I tried l'unico and was subdued to average service and food that can at best be called not good. I'd rather call it quite bad. On the strength of this review I tried it and regretted almost every moment of it.

I expected the pizzas here to be better. I found them tough and the toppings to be a little dry. I'm not sure I'll go back - it just wasn't right.

I was taken here by friends who wanted to try for themselves this place. (It had a reputation for overcooked meat and being expensive) We weren't shown much in the way of service for ages and were told that they were out of so many things from the menu. We tried a pasta and their seafood lasagne. They were bad. Overcooked and the seafood had no taste. On the way home we got take away.

Low standards! One of only two entrées arrived (order was for two entrees and two mains). A couple at the next table had been waiting too long since they got up and walked out! Our mains arrived and the waitress asked if we would like to cancel our entrée or get it after?!. Poor service continued with a waitress bringing out pizza (not ordered), after offering it to 2 others, and then asking if we would like our mains!? The manger said the wait staff were new; so why are they all rostered on at once? They weren't busy; a third of the restaurant was empty! The entree was plain and boring. The fennel served with the beef had a grey tinge, was dry and lacked flavour indicating it had been pre-prepared for a significant time before serving. The Crab and Moreton Bay Bug Lasagna contained quite a few pieces of shell (easily avoided if attention to detail observed). An unimpressive and disappointing experience that was shared by more than one table.

Poor food brought to us by bored looking staff. The worst part of it was the abuse that I could hear the owner yelling at the kitchen staff - veryy poor. You shouldn't go.
