Belgian Beer Café
Editorial
First opening in 2006, the Belgian Beer Cafe in Kingston is one of a growing number in Australia and around the world. Recently, however, there have been major changes to the place and ambitious aims set by new management. On the surface the cafe is more or less the same – authentic Belgian decor, paneling, tables and chairs are all still present, but the trained eye will spot some major changes. Handmade staff aprons and menus are visible differences but the real transformation lies within the menus themselves. The Cafe has had a complete overhaul of both drink and food menus, increasing the number of beers available from 14 to more than 70 (including five on tap) and the number of wines from 13 to 40. Other innovative additions to the drinks menu include beer cocktails (try the “Flemish haymaker” made from Belle-Vue Kriek, rum, vodka, blue Curacao and orange juice) and house-infused vodka, gin and tequila.
The selection of food at the Belgian Beer Cafe has increased tremendously. Still centerpiece are mussels, available in five and 11 flavours at lunch and dinner respectively, but also available are salads, sandwiches, pizzas and a burger that includes 19 ingredients in the patty alone. The all-day dining menu has no trace of bulk-order frozen food. Expect dishes such as crab and corn fritters, cheese croquettes and Swedish meatballs, all made on-site and presented with care. And although not for the calorie-conscious, the “indulgence frites” with Stella jus and cheddar are a poutine-like dish that is sure to become legendary around Kingston. The food menus now have a drink suggestion for every dish and the drink menu now has pages upon pages of explanatory notes and interesting facts. All of this translates into a culinary and drinking experience that stimulates as well as delights.

equally as good as the moules in Brussels. A lovely place to spend a rainy Sunday afternoon.
