Rice Paper

places|act|canberra|rice%20paper|1
This smart eatery brings convenient Vietnamese cuisine to the bustling CBD. The menu is a mixture of traditional and more modern food, including (naturally) the namesake rice paper rolls.

Editorial

Rice Paper is one of the newer eateries of Garema Place and it is certainly a welcome addition. The interior is smooth and modern with tiled floors and white walls. Deep-red upholstered chairs sit at dark-wood tables, pretty lanterns hang above the front counter, and large black and white photos of Vietnam (during the French era pre-1954) hang on the walls. A smattering of tables are available under umbrellas out the front - a lovely patch for enjoying a spot of people-watching.

The restaurant name suits it well, because if there's one thing on this menu you shouldn't miss it's the rice paper rolls. Choose from prawn and pork or prawn and chicken with lettuce, fresh herbs and peanut dipping sauce or the vegetarian option with tofu, water yam, fresh herbs and tamarind and peanut dipping sauce. The menu lists a selection of suggested dishes and you would do well to heed its advice. Try the deep-fried soft-shell crab with watercress or the banh xeo (a traditional Vietnamese crispy pancake stuffed with shrimp, soya bean, bean shoot and fresh herbs and eaten by hand). A variety of soups, salads, curries, rice and noodle dishes are also available. For dessert try the interesting red bean, banana and chocolate spring roll with green tea ice-cream. Definitely worth checking out.
