Questacon

As the name suggests, Questacon is on a quest to promote greater understanding and awareness of science and technology in the community.

Editorial

Questacon is a sci-fi name for a sci-fi kind of place, formally known as The National Science and Technology Centre.

Questacon opened its doors in 1988, thanks to a generous grant from Japan, and with over 200 interactive exhibits relating to science and technology, has been busy educating us ever since. A team of over 200 staff members as well as an additional 150 or so volunteer ‘Explainers’ are on hand to help with an impressive number of exhibitions and shows designed to ignite our interest in science. While many of the exhibitions that originate at Questacon often go on tour, there’s always something interesting and engaging to see and do. Kids love the ‘Awesome Earth’ exhibition where they can experience lightning, an earthquake and a cyclone, or journey into ‘Measure Island’ where exhibits are presented as monuments and statues built by a long lost Civilisation. Kids can also join Penny the Palaeontologist, and explore the giant animatronic dinosaurs (which is pretty cool for big kids too).

It’s no surprise that over 400,000 people visit Questacon each year – because it makes learning pretty cool by using the innovation of science and technology in finding solutions to some of the most urgent challenges of our time. If you’re still not convinced of a visit, then perhaps the fact Questacon was a big winner in the Qantas 2009 Tourism Awards is further endorsement of this worthy pit stop on the Canberra Trail.
