Started last millennium, Mooseheads is an institution - it even has its own radio station!

Editorial

When people talk about institutions in Canberra, they're usually talking about the political or cultural assets of our city. So it's not often that you hear such talk about a drinking establishment. Mooseheads, for better or worse, is one such icon in the hospitality landscape of the nation's capital. And why not? The civil servants and visitors to the city work hard, and they also like to play hard. Mooseheads knows this and delivers on many fronts.

The late license affords the venue a nightclub status well after it's shrugged off the hotel vibe of day-to-day operations. While parts of the building retain the heritage of years gone by (exposed brickwork, elaborate plaster cornices and polished, stained-wood floors), it is quite obviously geared to offer various forms of entertainment. Pool tables, sporting paraphernalia and various TV screens are all present and accounted for, keeping sports fans satisfied. Those after some monkey shines can hit the dancefloor and be entranced by the many DJs home to the Moose.

The alcohol is a reliable assortment of drinks, although there are more specialist venues about should you wish to explore a greater attention to liquor. While there is a cocktail list, you're better off grabbing a beer or glass of wine or bubbly. Mixed spirits are ideal for the pool table, or just grab a jug of beer and check out the latest bikini competition.
