King O'Malleys sticks to the tried and tested formula of Irish Pub which has proven o successful worldwide.

Editorial

I have a confession to make straight off the bat. I'm Scottish, and herby of Celtic origins. As a result, I have an affinity with my Irish cousins. That said, I do not, and never will, understand the worldwide obsession with Irish bars. What's it all about, this crazed adulation of Leprechaun hats and overtly green couture in tacky temples of diddly-dee spread out far and wide across the globe? Why aren't Irish folks offended by such a blatant commercial cashing in on their national identity?

Well who am I to complain? They certainly are popular, and Canberra's King O'Malley's Irish Pub fares just as well as any similar bar from New York to Amsterdam. Expect no thrills here - there's Guinness on tap, along with Kilkenny's, plenty of Scottish and Irish whiskies, and bar food sticking to tried and tested favourites. And then there's the revelry.

Of course, no Irish bar would be complete without rowdy live bands playing to even rowdier drunken crowds, and King O'Malley's offers up the ribald high jinx five nights a week. Friday and Saturday nights bang out the pub rock, while Sundays lean more towards the folky variety.

There are a bundle of kooky rooms on offer for private functions of varying sizes, if you want to host a birthday or whatever. If your tastes aren't overly fancy, there's cheap food and beer to be had at O'Malley's, and a big beer garden out back.
