ICBM Club
Editorial
Ask anyone over 30 what ICBM stands for and chances are they'll mention something about intercontinental ballistic missiles. For the second half of the 20th century the missiles loomed over the political landscape and were used to keep the US and USSR from engaging in all out war. The crowd at Canberra's ICBM probably wouldn't know a whole lot about that (Cuban Missile Crisis, anyone?). Half pub, half nightclub, it's aimed at a younger audience, one born after the fall of the Berlin Wall.
A mix of drink specials and top 40 club hits keep the locals on the dancefloor. While evenings start off pretty slowly, the venue is usually packed by midnight, the main room awash with hormones and party pashing. If all that gets a bit much there's a scattering of couches around the edges for you to take a load off. The drink options at ICBM aren't particularly extensive, but that's to be expected from a pub/nightclub hybrid. If it's any consolation (and apparently it is), the premixed alcopops are cheap. So too is the beer. Bottom line, ICBM is aimed at a young, more commercial audience. If you still remember the cold war you may feel a tad out of place.
