Canberra Club
Editorial
If you're in the public service and looking for a casual local, then Canberra Club has your back. The city's first licensed club, it boasts a relaxed, understated elegance and reasonable prices. Divided into three main areas - the main lounge, library and billiard room - it's a welcoming establishment located in the city centre.
The main lounge boasts a long bar and casual seating facing a small stage. You can expect jazz and soul covers acts performing live throughout the week. The Billiard room, as you could expect, hosts a number of full-size tables and is a pleasant respite from the bustle outside. If you're looking for something a little more cerebral, there's also a reading room and library. If you ever feel like reading Moby Dick while having a drink, this is the place.
The drink selection at Canberra Club is modern and will get you through those stormy nights. The cocktail list isn't going to worry specialist venues, but it has a reasonable collection. The same thing can be said for the beers and wines, the options are perfectly reasonable, but won't surprise you. That said, there's a certain appeal to drinking your scotch/wine/cocktail while lounging in a public library or playing billiards - especially if it's on government time.
