Acceptable drinking in acceptable surrounds for an acceptable start to an evening

Editorial

A year or two back, this bar was awarded a gong by the Australian Hotels Association. A quiet and cheerfully decent place was deemed “Best Bar in a Hotel”. It is true that Binara One serves its purpose as a hotel bar very well. Inoffensive décor, a good wine list and pleasant staff serve a travelling business clientele very well. To say the place is unremarkable is not, by any means, to impugn it of under-achieving. The place serves a purpose. Particularly within a city centre increasingly dominated by loud, garish bars avoided by all but the very young or the very drunk.

Thank goodness for a place like Binara One. It does not strive to shock, make a radical style statement or trouble those frayed by the rigours of travel or of the civic centre's increasingly raucous approach to hospitality.

Nothing helps one to forget the travails of the city and the everyday, of course, quite like a good wine list. An impressive range of domestic and imported grape serves to diminish the memories of the day. And, a conversation with bar staff about a varietal can amiably murder a minute or two.

Looking out on to the green stretch of Glebe Park, this little pod of sanity helps restore your equilibrium.
