Atrium Bar
Editorial
When the Pavilion Hotel raised its tented roof more than twenty years ago, some sensitive locals thought it an architectural blight. A brightly coloured, tented roof resembled nothing so much as the turrets of a kids' bouncy castle. How were we supposed to take this seriously?
When the shock subsided, and, perversely enough, extended to a few other buildings in the region, all was, more or less, forgiven. The great sails of the Pavilion still looked odd from the street. Inside, however, the light diffused by the scandalous roof persuaded a few Canberrans to rethink their rancour.
This unusual treatment of natural light continues to compensate for shortcomings. Despite re-furbs, the Pavilion does still reek of the eighties. However, warmth, light and greenery soothes you into forgetting the Gordon Gekkos, the '87 Crash and dreams gone brittle from too much hair gel.
The simulated humidity also balances a fairly modest wine list. Although the service here is of a superior order, the contents of the cellar are not.
But, one should expect neither depth nor volume in the wine list of a hotel bar. One should simply order the sort of cocktail they drink in the Tropic of Capricorn, gaze blankly at a tree fern and warm one's self in the knowledge that winter cannot last forever.
