Seating over 600 people, The Playhouse theatre is known for its warm, wood-panelled interior and soaring balcony seats. Theatre, music, dance and comedy are regularly performed here and theatre groups of national significance such as the Bell Shakespeare Company are frequent players. Completely remodelled in 1988, The Playhouse draws on Elizabethan architectural lines, giving the space its wonderful sense of great volume and verticality while still retaining the intimacy of a relatively small theatre.
Smaller performances are hosted in The Courtyard Studio, a space seating around 100 people, which allows new or experimental works a very central venue with low production overheads.
The Canberra Theatre Centre is today melded into one large complex, although it was built in 1965 as separate theatres. The covered passageway later created to link the theatres was soon recognised as a perfect gathering place and it has been refurbished into The Link, a well-utilised, high-culture watering hole during intervals and pre- and post-performance.
