It is a mystery to most as to when café owners became anti-butter? Far too many café’s these days have decided that we prefer our toast unbuttered! So it is with great pleasure that Café Essen is generous with all things ‘bad’ for us. This is an indulgent experience indeed. Their ingenious banana smoothie with a shot of coffee is excitement enough, but then comes the French toast with bacon and maple syrup. You may go into cardiac arrest by just laying eyes on this thing, but what a way to go. And yes, the toast is served with butter – lashings of it.

Best Coffee in Canberra, also does a great all day breakfast, my favourite is the Greek Omelette (on the specials board). May not have the flashest decor, but the staff are friendly and service is usually much quicker than the surrounding cafes. Certainly my choice for coffee and food on a Saturday morning.
