Many a deal has been made and careers are won and lost, over a whisky or seven at The National Press Club.

Editorial

But you don't have to be part of the press pack or a 'pollie' to make it into the club, which was found back in the swinging '60s, as there are social memberships (not just to journalists) currently available for $75 a year.

You'll be joining an impressive roll call of guests who have walked through these hallowed doors - Whitlam, Nixon, Thatcher and Ghandi (Indira that is) have all given keynote speeches. Along with political figures and the press pack, there's a splattering of scientists, diplomats, bureaucrats and locals who head to the Club Lounge bar, which has historical political memorabilia lining the walls, for a beer, an impressive top shelf of spirits, a 'politically incorrect' cocktail and a bottle of reasonably priced Australia and New Zealand wine and tapas. While the restaurant, Columns, is modern Australian.

Music wise, it's very much in keeping with the sophisticated atmosphere. Thursday night there is usually a local band and Friday future jazz stars from the ANU jazz school on hand to provide the entertainment.
