Boathouse by the Lake
Editorial
The sprawling grounds and expansive carpark do not belie the true nature of Boathouse by the Lake. It would have to be the pre-eminent venue for corporate functions, weddings, political cocktail parties and raucous hen's nights. However, unless the entire place is booked out, the multitude of various function rooms means that you'll always end up getting a good seat, in a nice quiet corner with an incredible view across Lake Burley Griffin. That said, Boathouse by the Lake truly does specialise in catering and functions, with corporate events and weddings its forte. This is reflected in the discreet but helpful wait staff, the occasionally long waits for food (especially when there is a large function elsewhere in the building) and the menu, which has the tendency to feel less a la carte and more business lunch.
Even so, chef Daren Tetley has crafted a wonderful menu showcasing many local and modern Australian delights. The food, on the whole, is of high quality, however there are some significant misses just as often as there are spectacular hits. The oysters with lime were wrinkly, but the rack of lamb was served with a very interesting and piquant blueberry, pear and chinois salad with cumquat and vodka. Moving on to the mains, Tetley again showed his prowess in presenting an Australian favourite in a new light, pairing rare kangaroo loin with a grapefruit and rocket salad served with hints of pomegranate and ginger. For those with a sweet tooth, the dazzling chocolate trio consisting of Valhrona tart, Armagnac chocolate pudding and a white chocolate mousse tower is hard to go past. Certainly a must for your next function, Boathouse by the Lake is still a lovely place for a quiet dinner with that special someone.
