Pier Hotel
508 Nepean Hwy , (Cnr Davey St), Frankston
In some ways Frankston’s Pier Hotel is fairly standard, hosting DJs and cover bands as well as being a lounge, and offering live sports on the weekends. But as Pier Live and with its 350-capacity Pelly Bar, the place is a magnet for touring acts. Practically every staple of modern Australian rock has come through these doors: Wolfmother, British India, Eskimo Joe, Birds of Tokyo, Children Collide, Evermore, and Jebediah among them. But it’s not just rock dogs who will be sated here: crunk-pioneering U.S. rapper/producer Lil Jon has made an appearance, and Ash Grunwald has included Pier Live as a stop on his latest tour. This is the real deal.

Palace Hotel
893 Burke Rd, Camberwell
The recently rebooted Palace Hotel has a choice location – in the centre of Camberwell’s shopping district and mere blocks from the iconic Sunday Market. The week’s music starts with an open mic night every Wednesday. Gary Eastwood (pictured) and band then offer raucous covers on Thursdays for no charge. The week continues with more live offers but also includes DJs spinning tunes for the party crowd. Combine this with tasty drinking and dining specials and function rooms for more private affairs, and the Palace proves it can cover all bases.

Pure Pop Records
221 Barkly Street, St Kilda
Much more than just a record shop along St. Kilda’s main drag, Pure Pop is a social hub complete with a modest café and a tradition of rub-your-eyes gigs in the back courtyard. Folks blow through whom you’d never expect to see in such an intimate space, such as Oscar-winning Irish duo The Swell Season. The name of the place is misleading: all genres are represented, especially singer-songwriters and other low-key types. Though Pure Pop has recently had to move gigs indoors following noise complaints, there’s no killing the good vibes. This gem fosters a stronger sense of community every day.
