Essex
20 Essex St, Fremantle
Essex is a Chav town in England's South East. A place where people live in fear that their mode of transport might be 'commandeered' from them and a night out is considered a failure if it doesn't end in fistcuffs or a restraining order. Luckily England's Essex has no relevance whatsoever with this Perth restaurant by the same name.

The Monk Brewery & Kitchen
33 South Tce, Fremantle
The Monk is no longer 'Mad', having dropped the latter from its title, but it's still a must-see destination for any beer-mad connoisseur who finds themselves in Freo. In particular their strong, smoky-flavoured Rauch is a real treat, as is the smooth, chocolatey Porter. They know their stuff, these boys, and all the beers are brewed on site. And it's not just the amber ale that's hot. There are scrummy meal deals almost every day, like $15 pizzas on Thursday and paella on the terrace for $22 on a Sunday. It's not super-cheap, but the food's top notch.

Chains and balls, maybe a few whips and severe looking prison matrons are all part of the prison theme of this bar. Appropriately located in the Fremantle, known to have a tradition of convicts, it's a place to be inebriated and incarcerated. Handcuffs are optional.
