This action-packed modern day love story between a vampire and a human is based on the current New York Times and international best-selling series of novels. When Bella Swan moves to the rainy town of Forks, Washington she doesn't expect much to change - until she meets the mysterious and beautiful Edward Cullen, a boy unlike any she has ever met.

Editorial

American booksellers have hailed the author of the Twilight saga - which runs through four novels - as the new J.K. Rowling. Stephenie Meyer's first instalment of the Twilight series sold more than five million copies in the US alone and, thereby, helped to fill the void left by the departed Boy Who Lived.

With Meyer herself having the final say in the editing room, the film has deviated from the path on which the director originally set out. The author thought Catherine Hardwicke's first cut a little too steamy; hence the interaction between Bella and Edward becomes even more intimate.

The performances, too, are strong. Robert Pattinson settles well into a demanding first leading role, which requires him to project a restrained desire – no easy feat. The film's heroine, Kristen Stewart, meanwhile, is excellent, the Panic Room and Into The Wild star clearly well tutored by former mentors Jodie Foster and Sean Penn.

Bella is both vulnerable and strong, a three-time damsel in distress, requiring Edward's white-faced knight to save her, and yet also courageous enough to surrender to danger and send an immortal bloodsucker into a frenzy of desire.

Despite the presence of vampires, Twilight is a romance, not a horror, and anyone hoping to sink their teeth into a gore-fest will be disappointed. There is action, ignited by the arrival of a trio of wandering neck-biters who feed on the locals and lust after Bella's blood, leading to a showdown in a be-mirrored ballet studio. Hardwicke sensibly introduces these rogues earlier into the story. However, Hardwick struggles with the stunt co-ordination and the depiction of vampires in direct sunlight.

This is the vampire movie James Dean would have made. It's more of an awkward teenage romantic fantasy then a hardcore vampire movie. It's a love story where some of the characters happen to be understanding vampire's. Looking forward to the sequel.

This is the worst movie I have seen all year, it is so boring, nothing happens, and it rips off Buffy and Angel so much. How people like this crap I will never understand.

I thought this was a beautiful movie. Even long after the movie was over, I found it still moved me and left me thinking how lucky I would feel if I were Bella. Definitely going to see it again.
