Editorial

Made more sobering by recent news that leading Iranian filmmaker Jafar Panahi (The Circle, The Mirror) has lost his appeal against a six-year house arrest sentence, this day-in-his-penalised-life document must do what the title says. Banned from making films for 20 years, because his outspoken art was deemed anti-regime, Panahi and friend Mojtaba Mirtahmasb capture footage of him being tethered to his Tehran apartment. The anguish and confusion Panahi experiences as a muzzled creative imbues This is Not a Film with a contained plea for outraged response. Smuggled out of Iran on an USB hidden inside a cake, this quietly disturbing protest is often mundane... but that’s the provocative point.

A powerful documentary that all should support.
