In development for several years, this version updates the story from the 1984 original, switches the setting and swaps a few elements. But essentially, this is just the old dance number with some new choreography as big-city boy Ren MacCormack (Kenny Wormald) shakes up the music-hating town of Bomont. No matter how much it might still go on in small US towns, the dancing ban is still not the world's most dramatic hook, Wormald is no Kevin Bacon (the angry warehouse dance number is still silly) and Julianne Hough never really sparks as rebellious minister's daughter Ariel. But it all jigs along harmlessly, the big musical moments offer some excitement and there are some decent laughs via Miles Teller's gawkward sidekick Willard.

why not a remake of "flashdance" or "dirty dancing"?
