We all know the story of Dorothy and her adventures down the yellow brick road but have you ever wondered what tricks those witches in The Wizard of Oz got up to in their formative years? Wonder no more. After a 13-month season in Melbourne Wicked the Untold Story of the Witches of Oz played its last show on 9 August 2009 and flew into Sydney on a big broomstick to fill you in on some emerald-green details.
Winner of 20 awards, including a Grammy Award and three Tony Awards, Wicked: The Untold Story of the Witches of Oz is based on a book by Gregory Maguire and features lyrics by Winnie Holzman (thirtysomething, and Once and Again), and music and by Stephen Schwartz (of Godspell and Pocahontas fame.) It's an off-beat melange of stories - stories that explain those pesky little details that you just need to know, like why the Tin Man lost his heart and where Dorothy's ruby slippers came from. But it does more than tie up some Wizard of Oz loose ends. It's also a story about friendship and courage - and why truth is just something we all agree upon.
Before you buy tickets, here are some facts to bring you up to speed: Wicked has grossed more than $US1.4 million a week since it opened, and according to The New York Times is “one of the most successful shows in Broadway history.” Five million witch-loving punters have flocked (or flown) to see the show since it first made its debut at the Gershwin Theatre, New York in 2003. Back in Oz (that's Australia) and also in New Zealand 1700 performers auditioned for the eight lead and 24 ensemble roles. And since opening in Melbourne than 120 000 interstate and international visitors have flown in to experience the Wicked magic.
No expense has been spared for this production: with 380 dazzling costumes and technical wizardry that includes flying monkeys that actually fly over the audience, this is a production that entertains on every level. Whether you love musicals or just want to see what all the fuss is about, get a ticket to Wicked. It's a magical journey that more than lives up to all the hype.

I saw Wicked twice in Melbourne and was blown away by the first performance of Jemma Rix as Elphaba. She was incredible and i was so drawn in by the whole story and massive production i was compelled to go again, unfortunately we saw the second understudy as Elphaba and were bitterly disappointed by a bad performance. But none the less you must go see this musical. I love Jemma Rix as Elphaba and I think everyone who has seen her would agree she should have been the lead all along.

Saw this in Melbourne - extremely enjoyable, even if a dream doesn't have a back story!

Wicked has been running on broadway since 2003 and has 5 companies around the world. each company grossing $1.5 million a week. wicked has been by over 18 million people around the world. it is the most amazing show to come to muscial theatre since phantom of the opera. get down to the capitol theatre and check it out. you will not be dissapointed!

Each to their own as far as taste is concerned, but my daughter and I and so many of our friends love this show, we love the music, which we also have on CD (the Broadway cast), we saw it in Melbourne and are going to see it in Sydney. We loved the story, the cast, characters, singing, production and choreography was fantastic! I have been to most of the "big" musicals, both here or on the West End, and to many smaller musicals as well, and it stands up proudly among them all, in my humble opinion. Perhaps those who didn't enjoy it would rather go and see "Clash of the Titans" in 3D at their local cinema? Suitable for older children upwards.

I absolutely LOVE Wicked, I went for the first time in Sydney, however, I had the Broadway soundtrack well before I ever saw it. Not only I (which I am a college student) and my friend loved it, but her parents did as well. The music, choreography characters and set are amazing! It was well worth the money in my humble opinion. All the characters are just amazing and it is really neat to see the other side of this well-known story. Three cheers for the cast of Wicked in Sydney! I can not wait to get back to the States and see it there! It was well worth the money that I paid for it! I will do it over and over again, until Wicked is no longer touring or on Broadway! Great for all ages! If you ever get the chance, definitely go see Wicked.

My teenage daughter and I saw it recently in Sydney and we loved it. We have seen a number of stage shows and this is up there with the best.
