Whitney Houston: I look To You
Editorial
Release date: 5 August 2009 (Sony)
Seven years. That's how long it's been since the last proper album from Whitney Houston. Her various drug struggles throughout that period are well documented, so it's nice to see her back on the wagon and doing what she does best - belting out soul and R&B tracks. Leave your preconceptions about Houston at the door and you'll find I look To You is a very sleek album of contemporary R&B here. While things open with the more up-tempo, disco-inspired Million Dollar Bill and the electro undertones of Nothin' But Love, they soon settle into Houston's more traditional power ballads. Thankfully, they don't stay there for long, and the bulk of the album's 11 tracks manage to showcase Houston's vocals over an assortment of sonic textures.

As far as comeback albums go, this is a surprisingly coherent effort. Sure, it's a bit heavy on the ballads, but we are talking Whitney Houston here; there's got to be ballads or the diehard fans will have seizures. Ultimately, anyone who appreciates R&B will find enough here to justify the purchase. There are certainly a few potential hits to be found.
