Jack White gives the lowdown on the White Stripes new live recording, Under Great White Northern Lights.

Editorial

Eccentric duo The White Stripes are set to release their first official live album, Under Great White Northern Lights. After a string of solo endeavours - including a fight with the US Air Force and Jack White's not-so-great theme for a James Bond flick - the first ever, live album from the Detroit duo is, thankfully, as far away from a collaboration with Alicia Keys as possible. The album accompanies the DVD and Blu-ray release of their documentary of the same name, which follows the band on their 2007 tour of Canada.

The 16-track album is a recording of the Stripes's 10th anniversary show in Nova Scotia, and features a selection of the band's best, including Blue Orchid, Seven Nation Army and Icky Thump. Both album and documentary showcase the mould-breaking nature of the band, whose music displays influences from punk to blues and garage rock.

"If you listen to a White Stripes album, there's lots of different types of songs and personalities on there," says Jack White, of his music on the Lights documentary." Your brain starts to forget there's only two people doing it," he elaborates.

"The greatest misconception is that everything about the White Stripes is pre-meditated. The music is really completely in charge of us," concludes White. And we wouldn't want it any other way. The album is to be released on both vinyl and CD, and doesn't include the duet with Keys, unsurprisingly.
