The Strokes Retire

The Strokes’s Albert Hammond, Jr takes some inspiration from Blur’s The Great Escape LP.

Editorial

The Strokes transformation from New York garage band to rock dinosaurs is almost complete. Word is out that Albert Hammond, Jr has bought himself a country manor, possibly to retire to. Not that he's fussed about the implications - he even invited the New York Post out to have a look at his new four-hectare 19th Century-style farmhouse. It's located in the Catskills, about 150 kilometres outside Manhattan.

Apparently the purchase of an SUV inspired the guitarist's change of scenery. “It all started because I bought a Range Rover”, he explained. “I never thought I'd buy a place in the country, and everybody I know said I was crazy. But this is exactly what I need to slow things down; to feed my creativity and my soul”.

The move has more than whiff of Blur's Country House about it. If you don't remember, the intro to that song went a little something like: “City dweller/successful fella/thought to himself/oops, I've got a lot of money …”

Hammond's 2008 solo album, Como Te Llama? obviously sold well if he's off buying Range Rovers and country estates. He's also got his own line of suits in the pipeline. Now, if we could just get a new album from The Strokes …
