Come the Australia Day long weekend, every venue in Melbourne will be undoubtedly bursting with exciting events deserving of your patronage. But for any petrolhead worth their salt the decision is simple: head off to the Carlton Gardens, where the Royal Exhibition Building hosts the 44th Victorian Hot Rod Show (VHRS).
Since 1964 the VHRS has attracted tens of thousands of hot-rodders from as far as Western Australia, with visitors marvelling over the 160-plus models on display and entrants vying for more than $45,000 worth of trophies, prizes and merchandise.
The show is the result of the Victorian Hot Rod Association's hard work at reining in some of the country's finest hotrods, Cadillacs, customs, T-Birds and vans, from brand-spanking-new to ultra-vintage stock in every kind of colour and chrome scheme imaginable.
The VHRS is a family-friendly experience; there are a variety of food stalls and children more interested in crayons than cars can enter a colouring competition. Those arriving in their own rods are even treated to VIP parking.
