Australia's only professional taiko ensemble join instruments with Australian percussionist Claire Edwardes and the Sydney Symphony for a powerful performance of contemporary drumming. TaikOz combines modern interpretations of ancient music with traditional Japanese taiko drums to create an incomparable onstage energy. The visual intensity and intricate movements of the musicians on stage complement the deep rhythms of more than 25 drums. Utilising a wide range of Japanese percussion instruments from folk and classical music traditions the ensemble brings the music of the East to the West and creates its own unique sound along the way.
Though its craft is rooted in ancient Japanese practice, TaikOz itself was established in 1997. Through the study of traditional Japanese drum and flute music, the ensemble creates its own interpretation of taiko music by working with contemporary Australian and international composers. The group has received wide acclaim for its performances, both in Japan and Australia, and has toured extensively, recording three albums along the way.
Claire Edwardes studied percussion at the Sydney Conservatorium of music and is dedicated to the creation of innovative contemporary music. Her insight and the driven, elemental quality of TaikOz combine with the backing of the full Sydney Symphony to create one powerful performance.
