What happens when you fall completely in love but somehow your desire for each other becomes a force of destruction? STC’s upcoming production makes a few pertinent observations.

Bookings: Sydney Theatre Company

The Sydney Theatre Company's 2010 program commenced with a musical awakening and is now poised to follow that up with the Australian premiere of Stockholm, an intense work by Bryony Lavery adapted by British company Frantic Assembly.

The piece is multi-faceted, combining movement, music, stylised design and words to present the story of Todd (Socratis Otto) and Kali (Leeanna Walsman), the seemingly perfect young couple living their dream life: trendy house, explosive sex, fabulous city breaks. On the night before Todd's birthday, which they are planning to spend in Stockholm, we come to see the flipside of their obsessive relationship in a jealousy-fuelled, violent fight which blurs the lines between love and desire, truth and mistrust.

The fact that their destination is Stockholm is not random; it is Lavery's reference to the syndrome that is the survival mechanism of abuse victims who gradually affiliate with their abusers, a monstrous metaphor for the characters in this play.

Brilliant directors and choreographers Scott Graham and Steven Hoggett work with their amazing design team to bring us a beautifully shocking play in Stockholm.
