There's so much more to the St Kilda Festival than just the free Festival Sunday.

Editorial

When: 5-13 February, 2011
Where: St Kilda festival precinct
Tickets: See website for ticketing details.

The bayside suburb of St Kilda has long been a place that the rest of Melbourne talks about. It's also been the city's entertainment capital for over 100 years. The jewel in its garish crown is undoubtedly the St Kilda Festival, a nine day showcase of the best live music and family entertainment the suburb has to offer.

Kicking off on 5 February with Yalukit Willam Ngargee: People Place Gathering, an outdoor Indigenous celebration of music, dance and children's activities, the festival culminates on 13 February with Festival Sunday, an outdoor concert spectacular which last year attracted an estimated 400,000 people.

Don't miss KidZone, a free family entertainmrnt precinct feauring  the interactive urban cowboy clown, MC TimTim, and Melbourne's goofiest superhero, the Mamazing Flymo with his puppets. Returning this year are Suzie Sparkles Face Painting and the very large Big Rory the giant. Dogs are welcome - there will even be a doggie look-alike competition,

During the week in between, St Kilda's numerous live music venues thrown open their doors for a series of gigs and performances by a variety of local bands, musicians and comedians in Live N Local; a celebration of St Kilda at its best.

Live N Local will be bigger than ever in 2011, with over 90 bands performing, plus theatre, poetry, and free musicians' forums, as well as a free outdoor screening of the new film murundak: Songs of Freedom, which documents the journey of Australia's Indigenous supergroup, the Black Arm Band.

Now in its 31st year, Festival Sunday will feature dozens of acts from around the country, including honorary Australian Tim Finn (Split Enz, Crowded House), Brisbane four-piece Hungry Kids of Hungary, and the soulful sounds of Melbourne's Paris Wells. Then there's the electrifying rock riffs of Stonefield, intense indie band The Medics, and the electro-pop sounds of Kate Vigo.

Whatever your taste in music, this February all roads lead to St Kilda!

Wondered why the Citysearch.com Melbourne Whats On shows St. Kilda festival 2010 commencing from 11th Jan when it is not on until 6th Feb... Perhaps it is the ticket sales that might be starting from 11th Jan.

yes in the late 90's KISS FM was integral to the st kilda fest by providing quality dance events. Got the other radio stations jealous & the council then signed exclusively to a commercial radio station so we have not been able to be involved since. another example of churning it out for the masses

The hidden jewel of the festival? Jenny Biddle. A rare talent that should be on stage, on radio and winning an ARIA with her cd Chest of Drawers. Beautiful songs with raunchy guitar and a touch of harmonica. Can't think of a female guitarist who comes close. Jenny is entertaining, funny, self depricating, audience interactive and just great fun. A rare gift to the music industry who not only gets cheers and encores at gigs but also at her busking venue outside the GPO in Bourke St mall. She should go far.
