Perth's Winter Arts Season is the perfect way to get out of the house in those cold months, and ignite the creative fires within. And what better way to stoke those fires than to go and see the new production, Singular Women?
UK playwright Stewart Permutt's play is about four women. Bea is a publicist, promoting a book about her late famous comedian lover; Stella knows everything that needs to be known about chocolate, reclusive Frances still plays with dolls houses but has a secret; and vertically challenged actress Dora finds her career challenged.
It's a production of firsts. It's the first play presented by Sally Burton's company, Onward Production; highly-esteemed local director Jenny McNae brings this remarkable play to the stage for the first time in Australia with mother and daughter acting team, Jenny and Rebecca Davis, and it's their first time appearing on stage together.
“Stewart Permutt is an insightful writer with a highly tuned sense of observation and comedy,” says Burton. “I believe the audience will recognise something or someone in all four characters.”
“This is an accomplished bittersweet piece of writing...chilling…brilliant.” The Evening Standard
“…a nice mixture of theatrical raconteurishness and keen-eyed social observation, comic exaggeration and quiet truths.” Time Out, London
