Seasick Steve: I Started Out with Nothin & I Still Got Most of it Left
Editorial
Seasick Steve Wold, is a bluesman from a time we've forgotten - when things were simple and folks were kind. Steve's an interesting guy, and he's really quite lucky; he started out with nothing and he's still got most of it left, which is a pretty good position for anyone to be in. This album is a very enjoyable listen, even on repeat. At least it is if you like blues. He sings about events that most writers these days overlook as worthy material. Prospect Lane, for example, is about waiting for a train.
“If you're gonna sing a song about drinkin' wine/You should drink some wine.” (Thunderbird) A song about goin' up north to do things with potatoes. You know, working-man songs. Songs about life, songs about Steve's life. Real blues, from a white guy, in a time when the blues are nearly forgotten. This is the way blues are supposed to be and it's great to hear that this music is having so much success.
You can't help but be charmed by Seasick Steve. It's like listening to your grandfather tell you about the good ol' days, accompanied by some seriously groovy blues music that lacks all the pretentiousness that can be so detrimental to music in this day and age. Plus, for those who like surprises, Nick Cave is in there somewhere. As an added bonus, the production is beautiful, everything is crisp and clean, and still dynamic, which is very important for this genre of music.
Highly recommended for fans of blues, and even those who are not yet fans of blues, this could be a good time to start digging it.
