Rolling Stone: The Covers 1972 – 2010

It's the subject of a song, several books and of great ambition. Forty years on, the Cover of the Rolling Stone carries more cachet for popular musicians than a suite filled with groupies. Even as circulation on the grand old dame of rock journalism dwindles, her cover remains a focal point for the culture.
This month's cover features the young stars of vampire drama, True Blood. Naked and spattered with gore, the three form the centre of an image that is arresting and, according to the San Francisco Chronicle, "probably the best cover out there."
This ain't the first time such a claim has been made. The famous John and Yoko cover captured by Annie Liebovitz hours before Lennon took his last breath was named by The American Society of Magazine Editors as the greatest magazine cover of all time.
The folk at a smart Valley gallery have unpacked the past of pop so that we might see what Liebovitz, a Rolling Stone alum now best known for her work at Vanity Fair, and others have been doing for the last four decades.
This exhibit is part of the BIGSOUND music industry development week in Queensland. And, it's a damn find way to spend a lazy afternoon.
