Photography may be a relatively recent artform, but it plays an important part in the history of visual arts. This new exhibition charts the evolution of photography over its 170-year history.
With 36 pieces from the National Gallery of Victoria's own collection, the history of photography is presented chronologically, featuring examples of experimental photography, Pictorialism, modernism, social documentation and conceptual works. It is a rare showcase of some of the gallery's finest works (collected over the last 40 years) and is regarded as one of Australia's most comprehensive and outstanding collections. It now holds more than 15,000 pieces, both Australian and international photographic works.
This exhibition features works from renowned artists such as William Henry Fox Talbot, Frederick Evans, Ansel Adams, Lazlo Moholy-Nagy, Edward Steichen, Man Ray, Martin Parr, Huang Yan and Yee I-Lann. To coincide with the exhibition, the NGV is launching a new book, Re_view: Over 170 Years of Photography, dedicated to the photography collection. Written by Dr Isobel Crombie, Senior Curator of Photography at NGV, it examines the artists and their works, their style, contribution and influence they had on photography as an artform.
If you love photography and what can be achieved with a camera, then you won't want to miss this exhibition.
