Noche Flamenca
Editorial
Through the elements of singing, dance and music, Spanish company Noche Flamenca have embodied the spirit of flamenco - raw human emotion expressed in the most complex and demanding of art forms - to become one of the country's best. It was created in 1993 by husband and wife team, artistic director Martin Santangelo and lead dancer Soledad Barrio. Since then, through tireless work with their colleagues, they have shared the emotive majesty of their homeland with the rest of the world on a number of successful tours, the latest of which is Camino.
Inspired by poetry and stories written by refugee children, Camino reflects the strength, hope and beauty that can arise from those who are faced by such unfathomable hardship. It goes some way in understanding Santangelo's description of flamenco as a "primal scream". Flamenco, he says, is "... an essential cry to express the joy, sorrow, comedy and tragedy of individuals and groups who are repressed by some form of limitation".
Although Noche Flamenca perform to packed houses across Europe and the US, it has been some time since their last visit to Australia. Eight years have passed since their last tour here, so tickets are expected to sell like hot tamales.
