The world's top musicians have signed on with the Zero db campaign, standing against the use of music as an interrogation and torture technique.

Editorial

Elbow and Dizzee Rascal are the latest musicians to stand up and say that music should not be used as a torture device. The indie band and UK rapper recently signed on with the Zero db campaign - an initiative to stop governments using music as an 'enhanced interrogation technique'.

The campaign has been running for a number of years now and is opposed to various governments blasting prisoners with loud music as an interrogation technique - essentially to deprive sleep and induce disorientation from hearing damage. Viewed as a form of torture, the group have been attempting to put pressure on Governments and the United Nations to enforce the Convention Against Torture and stop the procedure.

The various acts signed on are all involved in a 'visual petition' of silence. Basically, they're filmed standing in silent protest. Massive Attack and Doves are another two acts to have signed on and stood their ground in silence. As the movement's director, Clive Stafford Smith, argued: "Torture should have been left in the Middle Ages; yet it rears its head in new forms. Music torture tears people apart mentally - as much as any razorblade. I encourage everyone to join our silent protest against the use of music torture."
