Method Man & Redman: Blackout 2
Editorial
Method Man and Redman were hip hop's most popular tag team duo at the turn of the Millennium. Their original Blackout album went platinum back in 1999 and they made their cinema debut in 2001 with the stoner classic, How High. The last few years haven't been as kind. Redman all but disappeared from the scene following his guest verse on Christina Aguilera's Dirty and sales of Method Man's last couple of albums have been disappointing. Frankly, both have need of a career boast - Blackout 2 looks set to do just that.
Red and Meth have a natural chemistry that becomes apparent the minute you put them in the studio together. The guys bounce lyrics off each other like an old married couple trade good-natured jibes. When you combine that with some competent production the results usually speak for themselves. That's certainly the case with the album's debut single, A-Yo, which hit the top five in the US shortly after release.
While almost anyone can fluke one hit single, Red and Meth maintain the quality throughout (most) of this album. City Lights, featuring Bun B, is another club hit and Hey Zulu manages to sound futuristic without falling back on auto-tune nonsense or cliches. If you've enjoyed either rappers's previous work, you'll be pleased to know this is a welcome return to form.
