Warning: Take your annual bout of comic gluttony in responsible doses.

History is yet to produce any human who is civil when it comes to buffets. We read the words All You Can Eat and we abandon grace. We pile our plates with everything. We gorge on foods and combinations that we wouldn't, at a more rational table, consider. Oysters with crème fraiche and a side of pineapple coulis? No problem. And a piece of chicken tikka, thanks.

When considering the overwhelming buffet of the Melbourne International Comedy Festival, it's essential that you remember your All You Can Eat behaviour. Think about returning home with an aching gut and a shrimp tail hanging from your damaged mouth as you say, to no one in particular, “I'll never do that again.”

You must do it again!

A hopeful novice, I first over-dosed on the Comedy Festival in the middle 1990s. Without sense of pace, restraint or my personal taste, I feasted on as much as I could. After 50 shows, the nausea set in and forgot my real hunger for laughter. Listen to this piggy as she tells you: if you're going to overeat, do so gradually. Try just a little experimentation. But, remember what you really like.

At Citysearch, we'd like to assist you finding the best of the fest. This is, rather arguably, the world's finest comedy festival. It's certainly one of the biggest and remains Australia's most ticketed arts event. Statistics aside, it's an absolute blast and one you should administer to yourself with care.

In 2010, we're here to help. With more than 500 shows between us in our comedy-gorging past, we've done the hard yards. Explore our site to find the best of the locals, the internationals, the newcomers and see if you can't find the very thing to whet the appetite and sate the hunger.

Dive in, but do so responsibly. We can't take the blame for your comedy calorie count!

That's a shame to learn, Deborah. I did hear she'd recycled her Fringe show. Such a talented young potty mouth she is, too.
