Melbourne Chinese New Year Festival
Editorial
Still recovering from New Year’s Eve? It ain’t over yet – Sunday, 14 February is the Chinese New Year and the streets of Melbourne are set to party.
And this year let’s hope you’ve brought a ferocious appetite because we are about to enter the year of the tiger. Don’t be afraid – Chinese dancers will light strings of firecrackers and perform several lion and dragon dances to chase away any bad spirits and ensure the year ahead is a good one.
So with only your senses to concentrate on, prepare to celebrate! Melbourne’s Chinatown will fill with traditional Chinese opera, arts, crafts, dances, parades, calligraphy and – perhaps the best part – stalls upon stalls of food. So get set to sink your teeth (and chopsticks) into all-time favourites like lamb skewers, satay chicken, sweet and sour pork, dumplings and lots of seafood or try the authentic delights of Chinese five spice egg and many of the other Chinese delicacies on offer.
There will even be a magnificent fireworks display to ring in the New Year and, best of all, entry into the event will be free! The FCA Melbourne Chinese New Year festival will start at 10am and wrap up at 8pm.
