The State Theatre Company of South Australia is proud to present William Shakespeare's crowning achievement, King Lear, with legendary stage actor John Gaden, returning to the role after his triumphant performance as Lear 21 years ago.
Written between 1603 and 1606, King Learis based on the legend of pre-Roman king of Britain, Leir. When the ageing king decides to divide his realm between his three daughters according to the love they express for him, Cordelia, the youngest, refuses to be involved, and is banished. Lear is left to the mercy of his other two scheming and manipulative daughters, Goneril and Regan, and their husbands, and consequently his sanity - and his realm suffer.
King Lear stars former Artistic Director of State Theatre Company, John Gaden, and is directed by State Theatre Company's current Artistic Director Adam Cook. |
“What an event!” says Cook. “The highly anticipated return of Australian acting legend John Gaden to the Dunstan Playhouse stage, bringing all his life experience, his wisdom and his infinite skill to this greatest of plays.”
“To attempt to give a description of the play itself or of its effect upon the mind is mere impertinence…the best of all Shakespeare's plays.” William Hazlitt

It's a great production, particularly the music and stage design.
