Sterling production values on After the Dance do little to make up for an album which lacks originality.

Release date: 14 March 2009 (ABC)
Jenny Queen is touted as being something along the lines of country or roots music, which may be true, but there's more to it than that. Indeed, there's much more to Jenny Queen than may first meet the eye. Or is there?

The beauty of country music lies in two aspects: melodic simplicity and storytelling. Miss Queen's latest album, After The Dance, certainly has melodic simplicity, but the storytelling is not so convincing. The style being alluded to, therefore, is country-pop rather than straight country. This is fine, however it then falls into the potentially alternative pop category, and it is here that the album falls down in a crumpled heap of confusion. The truth is that while Queen's music is quite accessible to the ear, it lacks stopping power. It won't grab you and shake you and beat you to a pulp with its originality or virtuosity, but it does provide some nice background music which is not pervasive, and that is what pop music is all about (when it's not about dancing ridiculously and shaking your booty … or whatever).

One thing that really stood out about this album was the production. The music, while not musically engaging, is very dynamic and all the instruments sound beautiful, as if the players were right there in front of you, playing with a magic invisibility cloak. Which is a real shame, really, because the music is not adequate for such an engaging level of production, resulting in a complete waste of production talent. All in all, it's ok for a casual listen, but don't get too excited.
