Jay Z has 150 million reasons to leave Def Jam Records.

Editorial

Jay Z has confirmed rumours that he's leaving Def Jam Records. The rapper and entrepreneur served as the label's president for a three-year stretch (2004-2007) before stepping down recently. He also had a long-standing deal in place between Def Jam and his own record label, Roc-A-Fella.

Talking to RapRadar.com, Jay Z (aka Sean Carter) confirmed the split and described his time with the label as a "unique and fulfilling experience". He went on to thank the various label executives and artists he had worked with.

Rihanna and Ne-Yo were the two most prominent acts signed to the label during Jay Z's tenure, with the addition of (former rival) Nas also seen as a coup. While Jay Z has remained signed with Def Jam since giving up the top job - releasing two albums in the process - his decision to leave probably has a lot to do with the $150 million contract Live Nation have been waving in front of him. The touring company has been snapping up big name artists in recent years, and $150 million is hard to refuse, even for Jay Z.
