Although he may have passed in 2006, J Dilla's work continues to shine.

Editorial

Release date: 16 June 2009 (Shogun)
Since his death in 2006, J Dilla's stature in music circles has only grown. An underground favourite when he died (of a rare blood disease), aged 32, a wealth of posthumous releases have taken his music from specialist retailers and the internet and introduced it to a whole new demographic. Jay Stay Paid is the latest effort and with producer Pete Rock overseeing the project, the best one to date.

Up until now, Donuts (the instrumental album Dilla made while on his deathbed), has been his most high-profile release. It propelled him beyond the hip hop underground and had countless lifestyle magazines singing his praise. Fusing instrumental tracks with guest appearances, this new album is looking to go one better.

A concept album (of sorts), Jay Stay Paid is laid out like a radio station playing nothing but Dilla songs. Tracks fade in and out, ad spots for Acapulco Gold jazz cigarettes are played and guest MCs (Raekwon, Black Thought, DOOM, et al) come through to do their thing. It's all pretty lose, but that ties in perfectly with Dilla's approach to production and albums. All credit to the equally legendary Pete Rock for assembling this. It's an essential purchase for the ever-growing legion of Dilla fans.
