With over 18 million albums sold and a devout following around the world, Incubus have the runs on the board, and all their defining tracks are included on their latest best-of album, Melodies and Moments. This two-disc compilation also includes a host of previously unreleased b-sides and rarities and it arrives as band members break to do their own thing, most notably front man Brandon Boyd who taking time off to pursue his art and writing and is heading back to school.
It all started for Incubus with the worldwide smash Drive, a track that captures Boyd's thoughtful approach to lyrics and song craft, as well as the band's use of electronica to back their guitar-driven sound. Since then, Incubus have garnered significant critical praise for not resting on their laurels and reinventing their sound with each successive album. The resulting decade-long musical journey is well charted in this two-disc collection.
Disc one starts with the previously unreleased Black Heart Inertia, an excellent upbeat pop-rock track, and includes big hits like the soft-loud fuzz rock of anti-Bush tirade, Megalomaniac. The driving Anna Molly also features alongside other hits including Love Hurts, Oil and Water and Dig.
Disc two is a worthwhile inclusion, showcasing a host of tracks that have never previously seen the light of day - the best of these being Neither of Us Can See, Pantomime and Martini, which retain that distinctive Incubus sound while feeling raw, fresh and energetic. This excellent collection is a must-have for long-time fans of the band and a good primer for music fans keen to explore one of the more interesting indie acts of the last decade.
