Nostalgia, the future, today, and self – it’s all there in this new exhibition from Tegan Empson.

Editorial

When: 13 Oct-29 Nov 2009
Where: Jam Factory Contemporary Craft and Design

Local artist and glass designer Tegan Empson has a new exhibition at JamFactory, called, intriguingly, Idol Moments. It encompasses a wide range of themes, from 'self' and the nature of human emotion and gestures, through to retro science fiction, nostalgia and contemporary society.

Empson's personality shines through each of her works, telling a story via the often whimsical figures of glass robots, android animals and rabbits with particularly human characteristics.

Some of the works in this exhibition continue Empson's research into ancient and modern day manifestations of the human and animal form. “The initial 'spark' for this work was a nostalgic look into 1950's and '60's portrayal of future,” she says. “As I continue to explore the visual influences of contemporary media and popular culture I have come to realise that the image of the 'robot' is becoming increasingly poignant within contemporary society as science fiction ventures into reality.”

Empson graduated from Western Australia's Curtin University in 1995, majoring in Ceramics and Glass, and moved to Adelaide in 1997 to undertake a two-year design associateship in JamFactory's glass studio and then obtained Honours in the South Australian School of Art's Bachelor of Visual Art in 2005. She now designs and creates limited edition glass productions.
