Hidden Republic showcases the best in indigenous acts in the country while looking towards the future.

Editorial

The 2009 Queensland Music Festival is one of the country's largest music events and incorporates a plethora of acts both local and international. Fittingly, the 17-day event kicks off with Hidden Republic - a showcase of indigenous talent. Devised by Black Arm Band, Hidden Republic has 25 of the country's leading indigenous singers, songwriters and musicians performing with backing from the Queensland Youth Symphony. It's a unique fusion of music and culture and an apt way to showcase the diversity of music that can be found in Queensland. It's also the largest concert event ever staged on Thursday Island and is telecast to the centre of Brisbane live.

Black Arm Band made its national debut in 2006 with the Murundak project. The group's mission is to "perform, promote and celebrate contemporary Australian Indigenous music to the highest possible professional standard as a symbol of resilience and hope in the spirit and action of reconciliation". While, Murundak was all about honouring the music and story of Indigenous Australia's struggle for civil rights, Hidden Republic is about the future and moving forward. On that note, the event features established artists like Ruby Hunter and Archie Roach alongside up and coming talent.
